Regional authorities in Thessaly were on Wednesday looking into how a portion of a relatively new suspension bridge linking the seaside towns of Agiokambos and Velikas in Larissa collapsed on December 31, putting the lives of motorists at serious risk.
According to preliminary reports, one of the concrete supports for the bridge was swept away by floodwater, creating a gaping hole that was 6-7 meters wide in the structure.
Authorities will be seeking to establish whether the fault lies in the design or in the construction of the bridge.
