Workers, locals hold demo in favor of Skouries gold mine project

In this Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, file photo, workers are seen in a gold mine complex in Skouries, in the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece.

Mine workers and residents from Skouries, near Halkidiki in northern Greece, gathered in Megali Panagia on Saturday to express their support for a controversial gold mining project that has fueled furious protests by other locals and environmental activists who say the mine will cause serious damage to an ancient forest and poison the water supply.

In a speech during the rally, conservative MP Adonis Georgiadis said the investment has the support of the government. Hellas Gold, which is 95-percent owned by Canadian Eldorado Gold, insists that the gold mine is legal and safe.

The Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court, has yet to rule on an appeal against the project by residents.
