The European Commission on Thursday welcomed an agreement reached by Greece’s government regarding new structural reforms.
“The 10 priorities for structural reform announced on Thursday by the Minister of Development are a clear sign of the commitment of the Greek government to bring about the much-needed reform of the Greek economy. This is welcome,» the Commission said in a statement. «The pursuit of these priorities will make an important contribution to the broader reforms to which Greece is committed within the (memorandum of understanding) and which are needed to boost growth and employment.»
Earlier in the day Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis had announced a series of measures which included the completion of four highway projects, an acceleration with regard to the absorption of funds stemming from European investment subsidies under the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) as well as a string of privatizations including that of the Hellenic Railways Organization’s (OSE) passenger services section, TRAINOSE. According to Hatzidakis the measures will lead to the creation of 30,000 jobs.
"We now expect determined implementation of all of Greece's reform commitments in full respect of (European) Union law, and in particular single market rules. Where relevant, the Commission Task Force will provide assistance,» the Commission's statement concluded.
