More than 3,000 arrests over scrap metal since 2010
Police have arrested 3,635 people since 2010 for stealing and illegally trading in scrap metal, according to figures released by Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias.
The minister was responding to a question by Golden Dawn MP Ilias Panagiotaros.
The site of people, particularly migrant, pushing shopping trolleys full of scrap metal through the streets of Athens has become more common over the last couple of years.
Dendias said he has already held talks with residents of Votanikos, near central Athens, about this issue as there are a number of scrap metal firms located there.
