PASOK cadre announces new 'movement' [Update]

PASOK cadre and former Health Minister Andreas Loverdos announced through his personal website on Monday the launch of a new "political movement" called the Radical Social-Democratic Alliance.

The socialist heavyweight has recently distanced himself from PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos as opinion polls suggest that the party, which is the second largest in the governing coalition, has experienced a 5 percent decline in popularity.

The movement also launched its website, www.rikssy.gr, listing its founding members and principles.

Speaking on Skai television later on Monday, Loverdos confirmed that the aim of the movement is to ultimately develop into a new political party, though he also insisted that he continues to be dedicated to his role as an MP for PASOK, saying that the new movement does not signal a break with the socialists.
