Eight prison staff called to testify over Albanian inmate death

An investigating magistrate on Friday issued the first eight arrest warrants, out of a total of 15 expected to be sent out, to employees of Nigrita prison, in northern Greece, who have been implicated in the death last week of an Albanian inmate whose body bore signs of serious beating and torture.

The eight prison guards are to face the magistrate, Georgia Toutountzi, at 12 noon in the city of Serres and will seek to defend themselves on charges of torture.

Ilie Kareli, 42, had been moved to Nigrita Prison, near Serres, after fatally stabbing a prison guard at Malandrino Jail in central Greece where he had originally been detained.

Sources told Skai that a Greek Police internal affairs investigation into why Kareli died in his cell several hours after being transferred to Nigrita from Malandrino has uncovered damning evidence against Nigrita staff.
