Police on Tuesday arrested the wife of a Greek Orthodox priest who was shot dead on Monday in Zacharo in the Peloponnesian region of Ilia, as well as a man who is not only believed to be one of the two shooters, but also the lover of the cleric's wife.
According to preliminary reports on Tuesday morning, 51-year-old Father Athanasios Avgeropoulos, a father of three from Pyra in Fokida, had received numerous threats by telephone from an unknown man. He was shot after withdrawing an undisclosed amount of cash from an ATM machine at a rest stop by two men riding a motorcycle.
Police questioned the cleric's wife, who witnessed the shooting, and found inconsistencies in her story that led them to suspect she was involved. Further questioning revealed that she was having an affair with a 30-year-old man suspected of being one of the perpetrators.
