Police crack inventive fraud ring on Crete

Six people, including a civil servant and a lawyer, have been arrested on Crete on suspicion of running a scam that netted them and another 11 suspects yet to be charged some 17 million euros.

The suspects, aged 44 to 49, were detained in dawn raids on Wednesday. They face charges of being part of a criminal organization that allegedly carried out fraudulent activity, mainly on Crete but in other parts of Greece as well.

They are believed to have blackmailed victims into acting as straw men in companies that racked up huge debts, including 3 million euros that was owed to the state.
