A group of 200 undocumented immigrants from Pakistan were to be repatriated on Sunday following a police sweep in central Athens on Saturday.
Police units resumed their crackdown on Sunday after an intensive operation in the city center on Saturday that led to 4,900 detentions and 1,130 arrests. Escorted by a prosecutor, police raided a total of nine buildings where large numbers of undocumented immigrants were believed to be residing and were expected to target more apartment blocks on Sunday.
Meanwhile residents of Komotini are said to be planning a rally in the northern city's central square on Monday night to protest the planned transfer of hundreds of immigrants to the grounds of police cadet schools in Komotini, Xanthi and Didymoteicho. The protesters are reportedly planning to travel to Athens on Tuesday to seek a meeting with government officials to air their grievances.
The planned transfer of the migrants was condemned on Sunday by the main leftwing opposition SYRIZA as «a pogrom» and by the Communist Party as «barbarism.@
