New heat wave to hit 42C by Wednesday

The latest in a series of heat waves that have taxed Greeks this summer is expected to peak on Wednesday when temperatures are forecast to reach up to 42 degrees Celsius.

The hot weather is to begin with temperatures in the region of 40C on Monday and steadily rise until Wednesday. Some relief is expected from Thursday when temperatures are expected to start dropping in the north and stabilizing elsewhere.

The national fire service is set to be on high alert as the risk of forest fires in such dry and hot conditions is particularly high. Firefighters were dispatched on Sunday to fight blazes on forest land that broke out near Corinth, in the Peloponnese, and on the Ionian island of Zakynthos but there were no reports of residential areas coming under threat.
