New poll shows SYRIZA leading by a small margin

Political newcomer To Potami stands at fourth place

A new opinion poll ahead of May's local and European Parliament elections shows leftist opposition SYRIZA ahead of conservative New Democracy by 0.9 percent.

Conducted by Alco on behalf of Newsit website, the survey showed SYRIZA taking the lead with 20.9 percent, followed by New Democracy which stood at 20 percent. Taking third place was ultranationalist Golden Dawn with 6.9 percent, followed by To Potami with 5.7 percent.

The newly-launched party, led by journalist Stavros Theodorakis, was ahead of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) which stood at 5.2 percent and Independent Greeks at 4 percent. PASOK and Democratic Left (DIMAR) polled at 3.8 and 2.8 respectively.

According to the Alco survey, To Potami drew most of its support from DIMAR (12.8 percent) and Independent Greeks (12.1 percent). A 7.7 percent came from SYRIZA while only 1.9 percent of respondents had backed New Democracy at the last election.
