As search continues for survivors off Samos, coast guard rescues 24 stranded migrants

As coast guard officers continued their search on Tuesday for survivors off the Greek island of Samos, near Turkey in the eastern Aegean, after two vessels capsized in the early hours of Monday and at least 22 people died, a separate group of migrants who got into trouble while trying to reach Greece was rescued on Tuesday morning.

Vessels in the area on Tuesday morning rescued 22 men and two women found stranded in the sea in Turkish waters, believed to have come from another capsized vessel. The Greek officers alerted their Turkish counterparts who took the survivors back to Turkey.

From Monday's incident rescue workers had recovered the bodies of 12 women, four children and six men by late in the day. Another 36 people were rescued and around 10 were believed to be missing, according to the accounts of survivors who said around 65 people had been on the two boats.

European border agency Frontex is also helping the search.
