Riot officer seen hitting protester with baton handle suspended
A riot squad officer who was caught on camera striking a protesting shipyard worker with the handle of his rubber truncheon has been suspended from duty.
The unnamed policeman was caught by TV cameras and photographers hitting the worker from Skaramangas Shipyard over the head with the hardest part of his baton after a group of protesters forced their way into the grounds of the Defense Ministry on Thursday.
Immediately after the incident, blood began pouring from the head wound suffered by the worker. The policeman who was on duty when security was breached at the ministry has also been suspended.
Twelve shipyard workers who were arrested over the protest have been charged with a range of misdemeanors and are to face a prosecutor on Monday.
