Five million euro tax evasion

A 39-year-old man believed to owe nearly 5 million euros to the state was arrested Thursday in the town of Platy in Imathia prefecture, as part of an ongoing police crackdown on tax evasion. The unnamed man has received a suspended four-year jail term for owing 4.3 million euros in tax arrears and is believed to have accrued another 440,000 euros in tax debts since then. In a related development, the 52-year-old owner of a clothing chain with a 765,000-euro tax bill was cleared of offenses by a misdemeanors court.
