Arrested fuel chief linked to influencing of Super League soccer games

An investigation into bunkering firm chief Giorgos Spanos, arrested earlier this year on suspicion of fuel smuggling, has revealed evidence of possible soccer match fixing, Kathimerini understands.

Spanos, head of Eteka SA, was one of 15 people arrested in February. He is also chairman of Athens Super League club Atromitos and according to information that has been passed to judicial authorities, he was in contact with four soccer players in a bid to influence matches for betting purposes.

The Atrimitos president does not appear to have sought to fix the outcome of games but to influence other details, such as the number of corners, to maximize winnings from bets with foreign gambling companies.

Three of the four players are from a Super League club in Athens, while the fourth plays for a lower league club, sources told Kathimerini.
