Ephraim allowed to leave Athos for medical treatment
The key suspect in the controversial land swap involving the Vatopedi Monastery, Abbot Ephraim, was granted permission on Tuesday by a council of appeals court judges to leave the monastic community for medical treatment.
Ephraim was released on bail from Korydallos Prison earlier this year but was barred from leaving Mount Athos.
Since his arrest last December on charges of money laundering and embezzlement, the abbot had repeatedly appealed for his release on the grounds of ill health.
