Human rights commissioner calls for action on police brutality claims
The Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks has recommended to Greece’s Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias that the government set up an independent body to investigate claims of police brutality.
Muiznieks told Skai TV on Friday that the “prestige” of the Greek police and the country was at stake over allegations about the use of violence by law enforcement officers.
Muiznieks also called on Greece to do more to tackle offenses committed by Golden Dawn and its members, as well as apparent links between the far-right party and the police.
Also on Friday, the police announced that an internal investigation had concluded that allegations four bank robbers arrested in northern Greece last Friday were beaten in custody were untrue.
Spokesman Panayiotis Stathis said the four suspects, aged 20 to 24, who are suspected of links to domestic terrorism, were injured during their arrest.
