Thousands in Thessaloniki march against gold mining projects
Several thousand people took to the streets of Thessaloniki in northern Greece on Saturday to protest against the Skouries gold mine in Halkidiki and plans for mining activity in Thrace.
The protesters included residents of these areas, lawmakers, party members, environmental organizations and leftist groups.
Unconfirmed reports said as many as 20,000 people took part in the peaceful march, which went past Thessaloniki’s iconic White Tower.
