Theassaloniki treasurer accuses mayor of embezzlement
A former treasurer at the Municipality of Thessaloniki on Thursday accused the city’s former mayor, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, of being involved in the embezzling of public money, which left the local authority with a shortfall of 51.4 million euros.
Panayiotis Saxonis told a court in Thessaloniki on Thursday that he, the municipality’s former general secretary Michalis Lemousias and Papageorgopoulos had been involved in the embezzlement, which involved Lemousias taking 200,000 euros in cash from municipality funds.
Saxonis said he was told he would be given 10 percent of the embezzled money.
