Man, 53, killed while trying to stop Paros robbers

Police on the Aegean island of Paros on Friday were seeking the four perpetrators behind an armed raid on a branch of Alpha Bank in the village of Naoussa that resulted in the fatal injury of a 53-year-old taxi driver who tried to stop the robbers’ getaway and was shot three times.

The 53-year-old, a father of one, had been standing next to his cab at a taxi rank near the bank when three of the perpetrators emerged with some 60,000 euros in loot. According to witnesses, the taxi driver tried to obstruct the robbers, prompting one of them to shoot him three times, hitting him in the face and stomach. The three robbers got into a car being driven by a fourth accomplice and fled. The getaway vehicle, which had been rented in Athens, was found burnt out not far from the scene of the robbery.

According to sources, police are investigating a suspected link between the Paros raid and a robbery on a branch of Alpha Bank on Spetses last month, when four robbers netted half a million euros.
