Amnesty International to hold rally against police violence

The Greek branch of Amnesty International has scheduled a protest rally in front of Athens's Police Headquarters on Alexandras Avenue at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, marking Human Rights Day.

The local branch of the rights group has accused the Greek Police of excessive use of force on several occasions, calling for the stricter implementation of disciplinary measures.

"Here is Greece, beyond the curbing of individual, social and economic rights that we are experiencing, gross violations of human rights by the country's public order forces remain a constant and painful phenomenon," Amnesty International Greece said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Among others, these include torture and other forms of abuse during the arrest or detention process, the misuse of firearms, the excessive use of violence, the use of insults, verbal assaults and other violations while policing public protests, as well as the abuse and rendition of refugees and immigrants," the group's announcement added.
