Greek minister slammed over thank-you letter to Clooney

PASOK criticized Culture Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos on Tuesday for finding the time to write to George Clooney after he spoke in favor of the Parthenon Marbles being returned to Greece by the British Museum in London.

PASOK said that its cultural policy representatives have been trying to arrange a meeting with the minister for “several months” to discuss issues such as the closure of the National Book Center (EKEBI) but had not received a response.

“We are saddened to see Mr Panayiotopoulos is busy sending thank you letters to beloved Hollywood stars about supposed comments they made in favor of the Parthenon Marbles,” said PASOK.

Clooney is promoting his latest film “The Monuments Men,” which is about a group of soldiers asked to save Europe’s cultural treasures during the Second World War.

Following comments in Berlin on Saturday advocating the return of the sculptures, Clooney on Tuesday called for “an open discussion” about the Marbles taken by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century.
