Civil servants rally in central Athens [Update]

A group of school teachers chained themselves to barriers placed outside Parliament on Wednesday as hundreds of civil servants participated in a rally organized by umbrella union ADEDY.

Doctors, school guards and local government employees were among those protesting at layoffs in the public sector.

Streets surrounding Syntagma Square remained closed on the day, as public sector employees protested against the government’s mobility scheme foreseeing forces transfers and dismissals.

Public hospitals were operating on skeleton staff throughout the day.
