Cemetery death linked to mafia

Police in Schisto, west of Athens, were Thursday seeking the perpetrators behind the shooting of a 44-year-old man who was found with a gunshot wound to his head next to his father’s grave in a local cemetery. He died of his injuries after being transferred to the nearest hospital.

Shocked visitors who had been visiting the cemetery in the morning reported seeing a man shoot the 44-year-old in front of a gravestone before fleeing with an accomplice on a motorcycle.

Police sources told Kathimerini that the victim had never been detained but is believed to have recently developed links with underworld figures. Other reports suggest that he had connections with members of a ring of armed robbers.

The 44-year-old had recently inherited his father’s tin foil factory in Kaminia, near Piraeus, the same sources said, suggesting that the killing was a settling of accounts.
