Spike in surrogate motherhood is exploited by some

An increasing number of Greek couples who are unable to have children naturally are seeking surrogate mothers to bear their offspring, experts say.

Although there are no concrete figures, dozens of Greek couples are exploring the option of surrogacy, according to obstetricians. The spike in interest, however, is being exploited by some surrogate mothers.

One obstetrician told Kathimerini that a couple had agreed on a fee of 20,000 euros with the woman who agreed to bear their baby.

When an ultrasound scan revealed the woman was expecting twins though, she doubled her fee, obliging the couple to borrow money to meet her demand.
