Greece fourth in school bullying, EU study shows

Greece ranks fourth among its European Union peers in school bullying according to data released this week which indicate that one in three secondary school students have experienced such incidents.

The study, which was carried out in the context of the EU-funded program “European campaign against bullying,” was presented during a two-day conference in Athens on Wednesday and Thursday which drew experts from a wide range of fields.

According to the study, 51 percent of students have suffered from bullying in Lithuania, 50 percent of students in Estonia, and 43 percent in Bulgaria. Thirty-one percent of Greece's secondary school students said they had been victims of bullying.

School children who are bullied are more than twice as likely to think about killing themselves and to make suicide attempts as their peers who aren't bullied, according to a study published by Leiden University in the Netherlands last month.
