Four policemen go on trial over 2007 beating of inmate

Four policemen accused of violently beating a man in custody seven years ago go on trial in Athens on Friday.

The four officers are alleged to have repeatedly subjected Christos Chronopoulos, now aged 41, to blows on the head and the body after taking him into custody at the Kallithea precinct near central Athens on the night of May 22, 2007. The policemen had been called to a cafe where Chronopoulos was allegedly causing a disturbance, possibly while under the influence of alcohol. Several hours later, Chronopoulos was admitted to hospital with serious head and body injuries that have since affected his eyesight and motor skills.

The court is expected to hear that the four officers initially told doctors Chronopoulos had been hurt prior to his detainment, before claiming that he had resisted arrest and attacked the officers. Later still, two officers made statements suggesting Chronopoulosís injuries were self-inflicted.
