School guards stage rally outside Parliament

Dozens of school guards who are facing dismissal were staging a protest rally outside Parliament on Thursday morning, gathering on Vassilissis Sofias Avenue and disrupting the flow of traffic.

The school guards have been placed in a civil service mobility scheme that ends on March 22. With the expiry of the term, during which they were on reduced pay while their status was evaluated, many if not all may face dismissal unless they are transferred to a different part of the state sector.

Cleaning staff at the Finance Ministry who are in the same position also staged a rally on Thursday in front of the state's General Accounting Office, where they briefly scuffled with police who used tear gas to disperse them.
