Relatives of ex-finance chief released without bail

Three relatives of former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou, who is accused of removing their names from the Lagarde list of Greeks with deposits at a Geneva bank, were granted unconditional release on Friday.

Eleni Papaconstantinou, the ex-ministers first cousin, and her husband Symeon Sykiaridis, as well as Andreas Rossonis, husband of Marina Papaconstantinou, another cousin of the ex-minister gave their depositions to special magistrate Iosif Tsalaganidis in Athens on Friday. Sources said that in their depositions they argued that the money appearing in the HSBC Geneva branch accounts was legally obtained and fully taxed.

A report by the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) last year had concluded that they had failed to declare a total of 6.3 million euros in assets in recent years.

On Thursday, Tsalaganidis released Papaconstantinou after questioning on the condition that he paid 30,000 euros bail and report at his local police precinct once a month.
