Tax officers walk out, call strike for Sept. 28

Tax office clerks launched a four-hour work stoppage at 11.30 a.m. on Thursday in protest at the government's plans to further cut their wages and called a 24-hour strike for September 28.

According to unionists representing the tax clerks, the cuts foreseen in the new austerity package currently under discussion foresees cuts of up to 50 percent to their wages.

The tax officers' action comes at a time that the government is attempting to convince representatives of its foreign creditors that it can boost sluggish efforts to collect outstanding taxes.
