Farmers insist on talks with PM as they continue action

Protesting farmers gathered at two new road junctions in Thessaly, central Greece, on Thursday while the number of producers at the border town of Promachonas swelled to nearly 500, as unionists insisted on meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

The farmers, who are seeking tax breaks and other concessions, said they would stand their ground.

“This is our answer to the government’s refusal to talk to us,” said Harilaos Archontis, a unionist in Larissa.

Meanwhile police scuffled with protesting farmers in the northern prefecture of Serres, a day after 12 farmers were arrested following violent clashes with police at the Anthili junction on the Athens-Lamia national road. The 12 are to appear in court on Friday.
