Businessman gets abductor to give him up

The owner of a major baked goods firm, Manolis Karamolegos, was safe and well Wednesday following his abduction on Tuesday night after convincing one of his kidnappers to release him and turn himself in.

The prominent businessman visited the police precinct in Keratea, southeastern Attica, with one of his abductors, an Moldovan national, Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after his abduction near his home in Gerakas, eastern Attica.

The 60-year-old was stopped while driving home on Tuesday night by four men on two motorcycles and bundled into the trunk of his car, which was driven to a remote farmhouse by one of the assailants, sources said. The kidnappers made telephone calls to relatives of the businessman demanding some 2 million euros in ransom, according to sources.

But Karamolegos is said to have convinced one of his abductors to turn himself in by saying that the police would have traced the latters cell phone signal already. A second kidnapper, also Moldavian, was stopped at a roadblock later Wednesday. The other two were still at large late last night.
