PM sees road project generating thousands of new jobs

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Friday visited the construction site where a junction linking the Ionia Odos highway to Mesolongi in western Greece is under way and declared that more than 4,500 people would be employed on the project by the end of the year

"It is a very large project and it also highlights archaeological treasures which we must respect, he said, adding that digs were being conducted on more than 6,000 hectares of land. The premier added that a multitude of similar projects were under way across Greece with the aim of boosting growth and creating much-needed jobs.

His comments came a day after Samaras declared, in a pre-election rally in Thessaloniki, that more than 550,000 new jobs would be created by 2018.

Earlier on Friday, Samaras visited the seat of the Holy Synod and emphasized the importance of the Orthodox Church's contribution to easing the social impacts of the crisis.
