Former head of Skaramangas shipyards remanded in corruption probe

Sotiris Emmanouil, the former head of the Skaramangas shipyards, a key suspect in a widening defense procurement probe believed to have received some 20 million euros in bribes to secure submarine deals, was remanded in custody on Friday after defending himself before an investigating magistrate.

Emmanouil, who was head of the shipyards during when former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, was in power.

According to prosecutors, Emmanouil is alleged to have handled 24 million euros in under-the-table payments for four submarine deals and to have kept at least 17 million euros of the money for himself. Emannouil refuted all the charges brought against him.

Yiannis Beltsios, a former close aid who faces the same charges of accepting bribes and money laundering as Emmanouil, is to answer to a magistrate on Saturday.
