Prosecutor to probe finances of drug rehab program

A special prosecutor is due to take over on Wednesday a probe into the finances of the state-run Organization Against Drugs (OKANA) after allegations of mismanagement made by Deputy Health Minister Zeta Makri (photo).

Makri on Monday alleged that an investigation of the organization revealed a shortfall of 8.4 million euros, 3.4 million euros of which appears to be entirely unaccounted for.

Makri said that the remaining 5 million euros is money given to OKANA by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) in order to open and staff special clinics for addiction prevention, but added that she received no proof that they money was used as intended.

Following the allegations, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis demanded that OKANA president Meni Malliori tender her resignation, which she did on Tuesday shortly before the ministry announced that the findings would be handed over to a prosecutor for investigation.
