One in three parents with children at a private school will be entrusting them to the state’s education system next semester, with most citing the reduction in their incomes due to the crisis as the main cause.
A survey conducted by Internet portal www.eduadvisor.gr on a sample of 952 parents found that 35.6 percent will be pulling their children out of private school and 31.2 percent are considering the option. Another 33.1 percent responded that they do not want their children to change schools and are considering finding the money to pay for tuition by cutting back in other areas.
For their part, private schools say that despite an average reduction in fees of 5-10 percent and discounts on services such as transportation, some 20-30 percent of parents are overdue with their payments.
Fees in the Attica region range from 2,200 euros for preschool to 10,000 euros for middle and high school per year.
