Doctors blast minister over charge claims

Police stand guard outside an EOPYY polyclinic in Athens on Wednesday to ensure that protesting doctors do not enter the premises.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis was accused on Wednesday of making “terrorist, fascist-like threats” by doctors working for healthcare provider EOPYY after he accused them of asking patients to pay for consultations.

Georgiadis fired another shot at the doctors in the ongoing row over the closure of EOPYY polyclinics by claiming that when the government put a ceiling on the number of consultations the organization would pay for, the medics used this as an opportunity to charge their patients. The doctors blasted the minister’s comments.

EOPYY announced on Wednesday that it would increase the monthly value of medicines that its doctors can prescribe by 10 percent. According to records, only 950 of 43,143 doctors had exceeded the limit by February 14.
