New PASOK president Evangelos Venizelos has met with President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias ahead of a visit to the premier's office where he is expected to tender his resignation as finance minister.
“The party proved that its soul is alive,” Venizelos said a day after he was elected head of the embattled Socialist party. Venizelos, who gathered more than 97 percent of the vote, ran as the only candidate.
Lucas Papademos, leader of Greece's two-party coalition government, is widely expected to take over the portfolio.
George Papandreou will formally hand over the party leadership to Venizelos during a ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m.
