The government is to launch a tender for private firms to assume Attica’s waste management services by the end of this year, Kathimerini understands.
The head of the Finance Ministry’s department for public-private partnerships, Nikos Mantzoufas, said that a file with tenders for Attica waste projects would be submitted to a biministerial committee soon. The committee of officials from the Environment, Interior and Development ministries convened on Wednesday to map out a strategy for waste management, where Greece lags European Union standards. Interior Minister Evripidis Stylianidis stressed that local authorities who fail to progress with waste management projects will face penalties. It remained unclear though whether the tenders for four plants in Attica -- at Fyli, Ano Liosia, Grammatiko and Keratea -- will be announced at the same time.
All units must be set up if Attica’s burgeoning trash woes are to be solved but residents oppose the projects.
