New bill to clamp down on graft to be submitted to Parliament
As Greece steps up its battle against graft and corruption, a new bill set to be tabled by the Justice Ministry on Monday aims to crack down on illegal enrichment and squandering of public wealth.
According to Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis, the new bill calls for harsher penalties on state officials and civil servants, but also on self-employed professionals like doctors and engineers, who are found guilty of the illegal acquisition of wealth.
Roupakiotis, who made the comments following a question in Parliament by New Democracy deputy Fotini Pipili, said the legislation will allow for the partial confiscation of illegal gains.
