Suspects in fuel smuggling case to be deposed over weekend

A Piraeus prosecutor on Thursday set the schedule for the deposition of 15 suspects in a large fuel-smuggling racket that will run from Saturday through Monday.

Police arrested 15 suspects after a lengthy operation uncovered evidence suggesting that an organized racket had distributed more than 4.5 million liters of fuel oil to gas stations across Attica in the past two years at a cost to the Greek state in lost levies of 3.5 million euros.

Among the suspects are 44-year-old Giorgos Spanos, who heads the bunkering company ETEKA as well as Atromitos soccer club, a senior official at the Environment Ministry and a customs officials.

Speaking to Skai TV on Thursday morning, Deputy Development and Competition Minister Thanasis Skordas did not rule out that more suspects will be rounded up as the investigation into the racket continues and reveals new evidence regarding its operation.

Spanos, who has denied any involvement in the ring, is due to be among the first to appear before authorities on Saturday.
