Civil servants' strike enters second day

A 48-hour strike by ADEDY, the Greek civil servants’ umbrella union, entered its second day on Thursday as public sector employees protest dismissals in their sector demanded by the nation's foreign creditors.

A rally is scheduled to take place at the central Athens Klafhtmonos Square at 11 a.m. A second rally has been planned at the same spot at 1 p.m. with a march toward Parliament where it will be followed by a concert at 3 p.m.

Traffic problems are expected in central Athens.

A rally will also take place at the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, at 11 a.m.

Doctors and nursing staff at state hospitals are also participating in the industrial action with hospitals set to operate on skeleton staff.

The Union of Secondary School Teachers (OLME) is also taking part in the two-day strike and has announced a 24-hour strike for Friday.
