Man accused of violating privacy of 9 million people

A 35-year-old man was to face an Athens prosecutor on Tuesday on privacy violation charges after officers of the police’s electronic crimes unit found that he had personal data relating to some nine million Greeks on three computer hard drives in his home.

Officers swooped in to arrest the 35-year-old after receiving a complaint from the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (APPD) about the man.

A subsequent search on the suspect’s home turned up the three hard drives, which were found to contain the personal details of some nine million Greeks including addresses, telephone numbers, tax registration numbers and car registration plates.

This data is held by the Finance Ministry, Kathimerini understands, but it remained unclear on Tuesday whether the suspect is alleged to have tapped them from there or from another source.
