Police in central Greece have arrested five people suspected of being involved in more than 1,200 cases of theft of electricity transformers, cables and other equipment from the Public Power Corporation.
Three of the suspects, Roma men aged between 37 and 40, were arrested on the national road between Trikala and Karditsa. The van they were traveling in was carrying scrap metal.
Police subsequently arrested two scrap metal dealers, a father and son aged 41 and 21. The Roma are accused of carrying out 1,222 thefts in the Karditsa, Trikala and Larissa areas since October 2011 and selling the stolen goods to the scrap dealers.
