Suspects fire at police in chase

Police were unable to arrest on Saturday two men that failed to stop their vehicle when asked to pull over in the eastern Athens neighborhood of Ilissia and then opened fire on officers who pursued them.

According to police, members of the motorcycle-riding DIAS squad asked the men to pull to the side of the road in the early hours of Saturday. Instead, the car sped up and the DIAS officers gave chase.

The two suspects abandoned their car on Iridanou Street and fled on foot. One of the two men was tracked to Ilissia Woods but he fired at pursuing officers and managed to escape.

The car had not been reported as being stolen and was registered to a non-Greek.
