Halyvourgia strikers vote for more action

The striking section of employees of steel industry Halyvourgia Ellados voted overwhelmingly on Saturday in favor of continuing their industrial action, that has been going on for nine months, one day after police intervened to open the plant at Aspropyrgos.

Meeting at the Labor Center of Elefsina, workers voted 165 in favor and five against continuing their strike that saw them clash with police on Friday.

They are determined to continue their protest action against the owners of the private company, that has signalled its intention to shut down its factory in western Attica if strikers insist on preventing the plant's operation.

Justice had for a few months now deemed the strike illegal, but police would not intervene to enforce the decision, until on Friday morning the government sent the riot police to open the factory, to the relief of the hundreds of workers who wish to continue their work but had been hampered by their striking colleagues.
