Roma couple remanded in custody as police publish their photographs

Greek police on Monday published the details and photographs of a Roma man and woman accused of abducting a child found at a Roma camp in central Greece as a magistrate remanded them in custody.

The Christos Salis was born on August 15, 1974, in Larissa, central Greece.

His wife has been identified as both Eleftheria Dimopoulou, born on June 22, 1973, in Trikala, central Greece, but also as Selini Sali, born on June 8, 1972, in Larissa.

The female suspect has several registered addresses and at least two identities. She also claims to have given birth to 14 children within the space of a few years, prompting authorities to suspect that she and her husband may be involved in a child trafficking ring.

A magistrate on Monday ordered both to be remanded in custody pending trial on charges of abduction of a minor and forgery.

The pair were arrested last week during a raid on a Roma camp in Farsala, central Greece, where authorities discovered that a girl they had claimed was their daughter was not a DNA match with them.

The blond, blue-eyed girl is aged between five and six, according to dental tests, and is currently in the care of The Smile of the Child charity organization while an international search is under way for her real parents.
