Samaras says delays cannot continue after Eurogroup's failure to reach deal

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has called on the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund to live up to their commitments after the two sides failed to agree on a deal to make Greek debt sustainable during length talks that ended without any decision on Wednesday morning.

“Greece did what it had to and what it had committed to,” Samaras said in a statement after the Eurogroup failed to reach an agreement and ministers decided to meet again on Monday. “Our partners now have a duty to meet the responsibilities they have assumed.”

The failure to reach an agreement on Wednesday means that Greece has to wait to find out if loan instalments worth 44 billion euros will be disbursed next month. The government says it will run out of cash reserves towards the end of this month.

“It is not just Greece but the whole of the eurozone that depends on our partners’ decisions,” said Samaras. “No procrastination can be permitted.”

The Greek prime minister is due to fly to Brussels on Wednesday ahead of a European Union leaders’ summit that begins the next day.
