New opinion poll shows SYRIZA ahead of ND

A new opinion poll published on Wednesday shows leftist opposition SYRIZA ahead of conservative New Democracy by 3.5 percent.

Conducted by Public Issue for the Efimerida ton Syntakton daily, the poll showed SYRIZA taking the lead with 31.5 percent, followed by New Democracy which stood at 28 percent. Taking third place was ultranationalist Golden Dawn with 10 percent, followed by PASOK and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) with 6.5 percent, Independent Greeks with 4.5 percent and Democratic Left with 3.5 percent.

The poll also showed that the government formed by New Democracy and socialist PASOK was still considered a better governing formula than a SYRIZA government, with 29 percent favoring a ND-PASOK coalition as opposed to 26 percent of respondents who opted for a SYRIZA administration.

ND chief Antonis Samaras was still considered the best choice for prime minister with 39 percent, followed by 30 percent who favored SYRIZA's leader Alexis Tsipras. Meanwhile, 29 percent of those participating in the survey said they favored neither of the two for the country's top job.
