Bomb explodes at home of Greek judge in Athens

A bomb exploded early this morning at the home of a Greek judge, Paraskevi Kalaitzi, in the northeastern Athens suburb of Halandri, police said.

The blast occurred at around 2 a.m. local time and seriously damaged the judges home as well as surrounding houses and vehicles.

No one was injured in the explosion, police said.

Local media have speculated that the targeting of the judge may be related to a case of a kidnapping of Greek shipping magnate Pericles Panagopoulos.

Panagopoulos was kidnapped in January 2009 and held for eight days until his family paid a ransom.

Eighteen people were convicted in the organized crime trial, which lasted 18 months and ended in March 2012. Two of those convicted were sentenced to double life terms. Other sentences ranged from seven years to life. [Combined reports]
